Biltmore Estate, in nearby Asheville
NC, is a wonderful place to visit and explore.
Located just a short driving distance from
Spruce Pine North Carolina, the Biltmore House
is one of Western North Carolina's most
recognizable attractions. Construction on the
historic estate began in 1888 and was completed
in 1895. Inspired by French Renaissance
chateaus, the estate was built for the family of
George Washington Vanderbilt, a prominent
American citizen that lived during the height of
the Gilded Age. Featuring more than 225 rooms
and totaling over 175,000 square feet, the home
is the quintessential example of the opulence that
characterized this time in American history. Guests
including the Prince of Wales, and Presidents
McKinley, Wilson and Nixon visited the historic
home and enjoyed the estate’s fine hospitality.
Today, the home is still the largest privately
owned home in the United States. The Vanderbilt
family kindly preserves the home so that it can
be toured and enjoyed for years to come.
Visitors to the Biltmore Home are always excited step inside this gigantic home
and its many stately rooms. Decorated with Louis XV furniture and exquisite artwork,
the home's grandiosity will take your breath
away. When walking through the home’s enormous
hallways, visitors are offered the rare chance
to see what life was like for the wealthy
Vanderbilt family. Special features such as the
70,000 gallon indoor swimming pool, functioning
bowling alley, turn of the century exercise gym,
two story library and other novel features
including an elevator, centrally controlled clocks, and an intercom system were technological anomalies at the time. Special rooms such as the kitchen, formal dining hall, and a few guests rooms are also part of the tour. In 2005, the fourth floor of the Biltmore Home was restored and opened for tours. The fourth floor was occupied by the Biltmore House maids and servants.
Visitors can explore the servant’s bedrooms, bathrooms, and 3 hall closets.
In
addition to the gorgeous home, visitors to the
Biltmore Home can also explore the estate’s
grounds which feature a collection of formal
gardens, working winery, small farm, and
equestrian center. Special tours of the home’s
private quarters are typically offered throughout the year in addition to regular admission. Visit the Biltmore House during the holidays and enjoy seeing the home thoroughly draped in Christmas trimmings and other décor. This special time of year is always a popular time at the Biltmore.
