Milepost marker 331 on the North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway is the closest parkway stop to Spruce Pine NC. Here the parkway intersects and crosses NC 226; you can travel 6 miles north to Spruce Pine or 14 miles south to Marion and the
Museum of North Carolina Minerals. Travel a bit further south along the parkway and you will come to the parkway’s crossover with NC 226A which will take you to
Little Switzerland NC.
Spruce Pine NC has several great
NC Gem Mining
attractions, and Little Switzerland is an
adorable, historic town.
A bit further north from Spruce Pine along the parkway are
stops in Blowing Rock and Boone. Beginning at Milepost 294 in Blowing Rock, there are numerous horseback riding trails and carriage trails found near the Julian Price Park and
Moses H. Cone Manor. Cone Manor houses the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s Parkway Craft Center, an elegant gallery of works and crafts for sale from regional Appalachian artists. Also, in Blowing Rock are the well known attractions
Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery Hill, and
The Blowing Rock.
Near Linville and the resort town of Banner Elk are parkway stops at the Linn Cove Viaduct Information Center, Milepost 304.4. The viaduct is a marvel of engineering as it snakes around the windy, rocky ledges of
Grandfather Mountain. At Milepost 308.2 on the
North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway is the Flat Rock Parking Area. Here you can hike the small nature trail to a phenomenal view that overlooks the Linville Valley and the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. A bit further, at Milepost 316.3, you will come to the Linville River area and one of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s largest stone arch bridges. The bridge is divided in three, 80 foot, segmented sections and is
close to a great picnic area.
Traveling the opposite direction from
Spruce Pine NC,
are some great Hikes at Milepost 339.5 at Crabtree Meadows. Known as “nature’s flower garden”,
Crabtree Meadows is a 250 acre nature preserve
filled with great hiking, picnic areas, scenic
views and a beautiful NC Waterfall area located at Milepost 340.3. A bit further away from Spruce Pine NC is Mt. Mitchell State Park.
Mt. Mitchell is well known as the highest peak in Eastern America with an elevation of 6,684 feet. Visit the state park and all of the hiking and rock climbing
opportunities at Milepost 355.4.
