Thousands descend upon Spruce Pine NC each year during the last weekend in July/first weekend of August to experience and take part in the North Carolina Gem and Mineral Festival.
Gem Mining in NC and the gemstone industry has historically impacted the small town of Spruce Pine and each year, the citizens of the area meet with gemstone enthusiasts and rock hounds from around the world to celebrate the mining heritage and showcase their finds. Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival in Spruce Pine
Blacksmiths and iron workers come from all over the Southeast to visit the “Mineral City” of Spruce Pine for the city’s annual Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival that takes place
each April. The event is typically held the last weekend in April and features tons of local vendors, great food, and hands-on demonstrations. Taking place in the downtown area of Spruce Pine, the Fire on the Mountain Festival is always a fun place to spend the day.
Toe River Storytelling Festival
The Toe River Storytelling Festival takes place in mid-July in downtown Spruce Pine and is a great small day festival to enjoy. In year’s past, the festival has included great mountain music, fun storytelling contests, and plenty of vendors. For a fun day, come out and hear a story or two.
The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games
The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is one of the area’s most renowned events. Taking place each year atop McRae Meadows on
Grandfather Mountain in Linville, the Highland Games in NC is the
Southeast’s largest gathering of the Scottish clans. The clans, their descendents, as well as those that love all things having to do with the Celtic culture flock to the region to participate in traditional Scottish games, enjoy delicious food and entertainment over the four day event. The NC Grandfather Highland Games take place each July and

The Wooly Worm Festival in Banner Elk
What better way to get out and enjoy the crisp, autumn weather than to enjoy the day at the Wooly Worm festival. Each year thousands come to the resort town of Banner Elk to pay homage to the wooly worm. The wooly worm is a peculiar worm native to the Blue Ridge Appalachian Mountains. Its outer “furry” coat is colored brown and black and locals and visitors participate in Wooly Worm Racing each year. After many different challenges and heats, the winning worm is tasked with predicting the winter forecast for the upcoming season. The brown bands on the worm’s coat signal a mild winter, while the darker, black bands represent cold, blizzard-like
conditions. In addition to the fun races and
other games, the Wooly Worm Festival is a place
to enjoy delicious mountain foods and adorable
crafts from local vendors.
This festival is one of the most unique Western
NC Fall Festivals that is enjoyed year after

Oktoberfest at Sugar Mountain Resort
Oktoberfest is Sugar Mountain Resort’s annual October autumn celebration. Visitors to Oktoberfest can win tickets and vacation packages for Sugar Mountain Resort, and ride the mountain’s chair lift to

Autumn at Oz Festival atop Beech Mountain NC
The
autumn at Oz Festival takes place each October atop Beech Mountain.
The Oz Festival brings plenty of magic and
celebrates the magical Land of Oz that used to
be a main attraction atop the mountain. Since
the park closed down many years ago, citizens
and Oz lovers have traveled to Beech Mountain
each fall to celebrate the Wizard of Oz film and
former theme park. Visitors can take a stroll
down the yellow brick road and tour Aunt Em and Uncle Henry’s farm. Special spots like the restored fountain of Oz, the gazebo, Dorothy’s house, and the twister room offer a special glimpse at several aspects of the
iconic film.
Bakersville NC Rhododendron Festival – Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival
The small town of Bakersville NC celebrates their annual NC Rhododendron Festival each June in downtown Bakersville. Typically, this festival takes place on the third weekend in June, however, it has changed in year’s past
and you will want to confirm the correct date should you plan to attend. The Bakersville Rhododendron Festival offers plenty to patrons. Enjoy delicious foods, browse local handmade crafts and gift collectibles, and learn more about this adorable little town. The Bakersville NC Rhododendron Festival is not to be confused with the longest running rhododendron festival in North Carolina, the Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival. The Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival takes place atop
Roan Mountain at the Roan Mountain State Park. Both festivals are great events and both offer plenty of good food and down home fun. The Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival always takes place the third weekend in June, as it has for more than 60 years.
