Grandfather Mountain is the most recognizable of all mountain peaks rising above the valley in Linville NC. Resting at an elevation of 5,964 feet, Grandfather Mountain is one of the higher peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains and one of the most famous Attractions in Western NC. Home to 16 distinct ecological habitats, the mountain has gained the distinction of being an International Biosphere Reserve, and the biology and wildlife on the mountain are well preserved and maintained. When you visit Grandfather Mountain North Carolina you can stand atop its rocky ledges and see views that span for more than 100 miles on a clear day. Visitors can also walk across the famous Grandfather Mountain Mile High Swinging Bridge.

The Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain is perhaps the most harrowing of spots atop the mountain. Carefully suspended by cables, the bridge was constructed in 1952 and it does swing back and forth a bit. The mountain typically receives high winds throughout the year. In addition to the swinging bridge, Grandfather Mountain is also home to numerous wildlife habitats and visitors can view river otter, black bears, cougars, bald and golden eagles and white tailed deer. Also, a unique family of squirrels lives atop the mountain at the nature habitats and are easily hand fed corn and other grains by visitors.

Also atop Grandfather Mountain North Carolina is an educational, cultural and heritage museum. Filled with native artifacts from the Indians that settled the Linville and Catawba Valley’s, the museum is a neat place to check out. Educational programs take place at the museum and there is also a great gift shop should you want to stop and shop for gifts.
