The Overmountain Victory Trail follows the same trail that patriot militia from Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina followed to defeat the British
in South Carolina. The American Patriots in
these states assembled together and marched to
the Battle of Kings Mountain. Their 14 day trek
across the Appalachians to Kings Mountain SC,
and later defeat of the British at Kings
Mountain proved to be a turning point in the
war. This victory lead the faltering British
army to surrender at Yorktown, just before the end of the Revolutionary War.
In the fall of 1780, the group’s first meeting took place in Abingdon Virginia,
and it is here that the trail begins. Following a pathway through Abingdon into Tennessee near Rocky Mount, the trail is further designated at the Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton Tennessee. It was
at Sycamore Shoals that Charles McDowell’s militia awaited the militia of the Watauga and Holston Valleys. Once the two groups
joined, they traveled on to
Roan Mountain
where a monument stands in honor of Overmountain Trail Association founder Tom Gray. This spot is also very close to
Spruce Pine North Carolina
and a nice place to explore and visit for a day
trip. The Overmountain Victory Trail also passes
through Spruce Pine NC at the
North Carolina Mineral Museum where a
reenactment of the march is commemorated each
September.
The Overmountain Victory Trail was created in 1980 by President Carter to commemorate the Overmountain Men militias that fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain. This important battle in the Revolutionary War furthered the American’s gain on the British and led to the British defeat that
helped birth our great nation. Celebrate our nation’s history by visiting these important landmarks on this great historic trail. Learn more about Spruce Pine North Carolina and the preserved Blue Ridge Mountain beauty found
