Perhaps the most notorious and beloved High Country attraction is Tweetsie Railroad. Just a short drive from Spruce Pine NC, off of Highway 321 between Boone and Blowing Rock North Carolina, Tweetise Railroad was North Carolina’s first theme park. Tweetsie Railroad opened in 1957 with a 30 minute, 3-mile train ride aboard Tweetsie Locomotive #12, a historic locomotive on the National Register of Historic Places. Tweetsie Locomotive #12 was so named because of it unique, high shrill that resounded throughout the High Country mountains when it was used by the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad Company. After the railroad was decommissioned, Tweetsie was purchased by railroad enthusiasts in Virginia and taken away from her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1956, Grover Robbins, Jr. purchased Tweetsie and brought her back to the High Country, where she received a grand homecoming. Today, the three-mile Wild West themed ride aboard Tweetsie remains the main attraction of the park, although, Tweetise Railroad today contains four distinct sections of the park, each brimming with rides, activities and family enjoyment. A perfect destination for families, with reasonable prices and tasty food, Tweetsie Railroad offers a full day of fun.

Tweetsie Railroad is open from the first weekend in May to the last weekend in October and daily during the summer and weekends in the spring and fall. In October, Tweetise Locomotive dresses out at the “Ghost Train.” Be spooked by Tweetise’s Halloween themed ride on Friday and Saturday nights during Tweetsie Railroad’s Halloween Festival.
